Upgrading to external Bottom Bracket

The non-proprietpry ISO standard for bicycle bottom bracket is the threaded 1.37in internal diameter with 24T with square taperred integrated axle.

Modern bicycles no longer use this standard prefering the external bearing types ehere the shaft is included with the crankset.

You can upgrade your ISO bottom bracket to a cartridge type while keeping the square hole crankset. This is the cheapest option because not easy to overhaul the cup and cone bearings.

My more than 10 year old Oscar Supercycle mountain bicycle has the cup and cone bearing, similar to my other Begasso Soldier folding full suspension bicycle. When I disassembled the crankset, I noticed the the axle is stiff and made noises.

Afyer spraing the threads with anti-rust spray, WD40 overnight, I dismantled the crankset and treated rusted parts with antirust primer and finished with iron oxide black paint. I counted my crankset gear teeth as 48T, 38T and 24T.

I was able to loosen the locking nut by using the set of bicycle tools sold at Aliexpress and Shopee. The non-drive side bearing uses 2 square depressions. After spraying with anti-rust spray after the crankset was diantled and waited for an additional hour, it was easy to unscrew by using a long nose plier. The drive side bearing bolt  has two flat edges that a large adjustable spanner was able to unscrew using a reverse convenience, i.e. turning clockwise to loosen.
